West Bengal Police Warder Syllabus, Exam Pattern
106 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Direct recruitment to Warder and Female Warder in the Department of Correctional Administration, Government of West Bengal, run by the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (WBPRB). It isn't a police post. The Board just recruits for the department that runs the state's correctional homes.
| Conducted by | West Bengal Police Recruitment Board |
| Employer | Department of Correctional Administration, Government of West Bengal |
| Cycle | Warders and Female Warders, 2023 |
| Vacancies | 130 (100 Warders, 30 Female Warders) |

| Appointing authority | As in Schedule-I to the West Bengal Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1971 |
What sets it apart is computer literacy: you need a certificate to apply, it's 10 marks of the written test, and the interview board tests it too.

The total is provisional, and 10 per cent of posts are reserved for EWS. Exempted Category, ex-servicemen and sports quota are horizontal streams, each needing its own certificate.
The 2023 table still splits OBC into OBC-A and OBC-B. The Board's later police recruitments dropped that split after the Backward Classes Welfare Department, on 18 May 2026, withdrew the 2025 OBC notifications and notified a State List of 66 OBC classes at 7 per cent, following a Calcutta High Court judgement of 22 May 2024. Syllabus
The Information to Applicants gives the subjects and marks; the Board sets the detailed syllabus. Questions are in English, Bengali and Nepali, except the English section.
| Subject | Warder marks | Share of 90 | WB Police Constable |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Awareness and General Knowledge | 25 | 28 per cent | 25 |
| English | 25 | 28 per cent | 10 |
| Elementary Mathematics (Madhyamik standard) | 20 | 22 per cent | 25 |
| Reasoning | 10 | 11 per cent | 25 |
| Computer Literacy | 10 | 11 per cent | Not examined |

English is two and a half times its constable weight, Reasoning drops from 25 to 10, and Computer Literacy is new. Constable material won't fit. The constable paper is also set in Bengali and Nepali only.
Eligibility Criteria
- Indian citizen.
- Age 18 to 27 on 1 January 2023 (tighter than the 30 allowed for WB Police constables). Relaxed by 5 years for SC and ST of West Bengal only, 3 years for OBC of West Bengal only, and for ex-servicemen under government rules, with service counted to 1 January 2023. Certificates from other states don't count.
- Madhyamik pass from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or equivalent.
- A computer literacy certificate from a recognised institution.
Both qualifications must be held on or before the advertisement date. Get either later and you're rejected whenever it's found.
Category and certificates
- No change of category after your interview date.
- OBC-A and OBC-B certificates had to be issued within one year before 1 January 2023. Take the age relaxation and fail to produce one, and you're out.
- Before downloading the interview call letter, upload proof of date of birth, qualification, caste, EWS, Exempted Category, and Gorkha, Garhwali or Rajbanshi community if claiming the height relaxation.
- Ex-servicemen bring service documents in original; government employees bring an NOC from the Head of Office; sports quota candidates use the Annexure-A proforma.
Physical standards are under the exam pattern.
Selection Process
- Written test, 90 marks. Counts.
- Physical Measurement Test. Qualifying.
- Physical Efficiency Test. Qualifying.
- Interview, 10 marks. Counts.
The merit list is written plus interview, out of 100. Ties go to higher written marks, then the older candidate, then a rule the Board sets.
After the merit list
- Verification Roll, a character and antecedents check.
- Medical, only after the Verification Roll comes back with "No Objection", at State Government designated hospitals.
- Appointment.
Medical standards: no knock knee, flat foot, varicose vein or squint eyes; vision 6/6, with or without glasses; high colour vision, not colour blind. Nothing earlier tests these, so check them before you apply.
Salary
The 2023 Information to Applicants doesn't state the pay scale. It's set by the West Bengal government's pay rules for the Department of Correctional Administration. Check the next advertisement on prb.wb.gov.in.
The warder merit list is 90 written plus 10 interview; a WB Police constable's is 85 plus 15. Both total 100.
How to Apply
Apply online through the Board's site, prb.wb.gov.in. The 2023 Notice, Information to Applicants and list of Sahaj Retail help centres came out on 2 August 2023, and the fee notice on 21 August 2023.
- After applications close there's a short editing window for personal details, except permanent State, mobile and email. After that, only category can change, by petition in person or by email within the stated time.
- From the 2025 cycles, admit card download needs your Aadhaar number and Aadhaar-linked mobile, confirmed by OTP. That mobile then becomes your registered number for all SMS.
- At the venue, bring the e-admit card and original Aadhaar. Your photo and digital attendance are captured; refuse and you're rejected.
- Banned: mobile phones, Bluetooth hearing devices, portable scanners, digital or smart watches, calculators, and high-heeled footwear. Canvassing cancels your candidature.

Admit Card
Admit cards for each stage (written, PMT and PET, interview) are on prb.wb.gov.in under Admit Cards. You can't download the interview call letter until you've uploaded your certificates, so have them ready early.
Result
The Board posts written results (which shortlist for the PMT and PET) and the final merit list under Written Results and Final Results on prb.wb.gov.in. Finished cycles move to Completed Recruitment Drives. Selection stays provisional until the Verification Roll and medical are cleared.
Cut Off
The Board doesn't fix a cut-off in advance. It sets the written qualifying mark for each cycle at its discretion and publishes results on prb.wb.gov.in under Written Results and Final Results.
With 130 posts over 16 category rows, several rows carry just one or two posts (ST Exempted Category 2, SC Ex-servicemen 2, EWS Ex-servicemen 1, sports quota 2), so a past cycle's line won't predict yours.
Preparation Tips
- Get the computer literacy certificate before the advertisement. It can't be acquired later.
- Prepare computers twice: 10 written marks, and again at the interview.
- Don't use constable material. English is 25 here, Reasoning only 10.
- Watch the clock. 90 questions in an hour is about 40 seconds each. With a quarter mark (0.25) off per wrong answer, four wrong cancel one right, and a blind guess gains nothing.
- Train the right event. Warders: 1,600 m in 6:30, a distance run. Female Warders: 400 m in 1:50, closer to a sprint and a faster pace than the 800 metres in 4 minutes asked of female constables. One chance, RFID-timed.
- Check your weight against the chart. A 168 cm Warder needs 56 to 71 kg; a 160 cm Female Warder 48 to 61 kg. Too light fails as surely as too heavy.
- Check the medical standards now: they come last.
