Computer Operating System Questions and Answers

Answer: D

The one that is not an operating system is Opera.

Opera is a web browser, like Chrome, Firefox and Edge.

The other three are operating systems: Linux is a family of open-source operating systems built on the Linux kernel, Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux distributions, and Android is Google's Linux-based operating system for phones and tablets.

Answer: D

iPhone OS (now iOS) is not Linux based. It was developed by Apple and derives from its own Unix-like Darwin and Mac OS X code, not from the Linux kernel. Android is built on a modified Linux kernel, and WebOS (originally from Palm, later HP and LG) and Maemo (from Nokia) are also Linux-based mobile platforms.

Answer: D

The feature is multitasking.

A multitasking operating system lets more than one program (task) run concurrently on the same computer. The processor switches rapidly between tasks, giving each a short slice of time, so a user can, for example, type a document while music plays and a file downloads.

Multi user means several users can use the system at the same time, which is about users, not programs. Multiprocessing means the computer has more than one processor, which is hardware rather than the ability to run several programs. A switching system is a telecommunication term.

Answer: C

Correct answer: Real time system

A real-time system must respond within a deadline set by the process it controls, because a correct answer that arrives late is useless - the world has moved on. Batch and time-sharing systems aim at throughput and fair response instead, with no guaranteed deadline.

Answer: B

Correct answer: Public domain program

A public domain program carries no copyright restriction, so anyone may compile, use, change and redistribute it freely. Shareware is copyrighted and may be tried before purchase but must then be paid for, and firmware describes where a program is stored rather than its licence.

Answer: C

Correct answer: a program in execution

A program is a passive file of instructions on disk; a process is that program actually running, with a program counter, registers, a stack, its own address space and an entry in the process table. One program may have several processes running from it at once.

Answer: C

Correct answer: Windows 8

Windows 8 dropped the Start button from the desktop taskbar, replacing the Start menu with the full-screen Start screen - a change so unpopular that Windows 8.1 restored the button and Windows 10 restored the menu. Vista and 7 both have it.

Answer: D

Correct answer: multitasking

Running more than one program at a time requires multitasking: the system must hold several programs, keep the state of each, and switch the processor between them quickly enough that all appear to advance together. Virtual memory helps by letting them all be resident, but it is the switching that makes concurrency.

Answer: C

The Banker's algorithm is a resource allocation & deadlock avoidance algorithm developed by Edsger Dijkstra that tests for safety by simulating the allocation of pre-determined maximum possible amounts of all resources, and then makes a "safe-state" check to test for possible deadlock conditions for all other pending activities, before deciding whether allocation should be allowed to continue

Answer: C

Correct answer: linker

Each object module lists the symbols it defines and the external ones it refers to. The linker gathers the modules, matches every reference to a definition, adjusts the addresses accordingly, and produces a single load module. The loader then places that module in memory.
