RRB JE EC Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
186 topics across 11 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
RRB JE (Electronics) means the electronics-side Junior Engineer posts in the Railway Recruitment Boards' joint notice, CEN No. 04/2026 of 13 August 2026. That notice also recruits Depot Material Superintendents and, since Corrigendum No. 1 on 18 August, 35 Chemical and Metallurgical Assistants.
| Pay | Level 6, ₹35,400 initial |
| Age on 1 January 2027 | 18 to 33 |
| Vacancies, all RRBs | 4,029 (3,993 before the corrigendum) |
| Application window | 14 August to 13 September 2026 |
The Electronics Exam Group is the widest of the four. Electronics, Instrumentation and Control, Communication, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and IT all sit the same technical paper, so you compete with CS and IT graduates on one Merit Index scale. The syllabus shows it: three of its ten topics are computing.
The first CBT is general (maths, reasoning, awareness, school science). Your branch counts only in the second CBT's 100 technical marks. A wrong answer costs a third of a mark in both.

Exam Pattern
Both CBTs are the same for every post in the CEN apart from Technical Abilities, which for this group follows the Electronics and Allied Engineering syllabus. CS and IT candidates sit it too.
| Stage | Questions and marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Stage CBT | 100 | 90 minutes |
| 2nd Stage CBT | 150 | 120 minutes (160 with a scribe) |
| 1st Stage CBT | Marks |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | 30 |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 25 |
| General Awareness | 15 |
| General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences to Class 10 CBSE) | 30 |
| 2nd Stage CBT | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Awareness | 15 |
| Physics and Chemistry | 15 |
| Basics of Computers and Applications | 10 |
| Basics of Environment and Pollution Control | 10 |
| Technical Abilities | 100 |
- Penalty: a third of the question's marks per wrong answer, 0.33 on a 1-mark question, in both CBTs. That's stiffer than the 0.25 most exams use.
- Calculator: virtual, second CBT only.
- Speed: about 54 seconds a question in the first, 48 in the second.
- The section split is indicative and can shift a little.
Qualifying percentages
| Category | Minimum in each CBT |
|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 40 per cent |
| OBC (NCL) and SC | 30 per cent |
| ST | 25 per cent |
The same apply to ex-servicemen by community, with a possible 2-mark relaxation for PwBD candidates if reserved posts can't otherwise be filled.
Merit Index
After normalisation of multi-session papers, marks are rescaled so all four Exam Groups can be ranked together:
| Anchor | Marks | Merit Index score |
|---|---|---|
| Mq, general qualifying mark | 40 | 350 |
| Mt, mean of the top 0.1 per cent or top 10 in the paper, whichever is larger | Varies | 900 |
In a mixed group like this one, how the strongest electronics, CS and IT candidates do shapes everyone's index.

Eligibility Criteria
Age: 18 to 33 on 1 January 2027 (later than the closing date). Date of birth must be exactly as on your Matriculation or SSLC certificate; a mismatch disqualifies.
| Category | Relaxation or upper limit |
|---|---|
| Ex-servicemen (SC and ST) | 8 years after deducting service |
| PwBD | 10 years UR and EWS, 13 OBC (NCL), 15 SC and ST |
| Serving Railway Group C and erstwhile Group D staff, and substitutes, with 3 years' service | Up to 40 UR and EWS, 43 OBC (NCL), 45 SC and ST |

| Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women not remarried | Up to 35 UR and EWS, 38 OBC (NCL), 40 SC and ST |
Relaxations don't add up; you get the largest one that applies. Reserved candidates competing for UR posts get none, and PwBD candidates there get only the PwBD (UR) relaxation.
Qualification
Each post's requirement is in Annexure A. For posts open to electronics candidates it starts at a three-year Diploma in Electronics Engineering, and several also take a combination of Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics sub-streams. You need it by 13 September 2026; don't apply while awaiting a final result. If your certificate is dated later, show marks sheets with the result date or a Board or University letter.
Exam Group: Electronics, Instrumentation and Control, Communication, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology and their sub-stream combinations all map to Electronics and Allied Engineering. If you're mapped to two groups, choose one; you stay eligible for all posts you opt for.
Medical and PwBD
Medical standards (Para 3.0, Annexure A) run from A3 through B1, B2 and C1 by post, so two posts open to the same electronics diploma can need different eyesight. Corrigendum No. 1 added standard B-2: distance vision 6/9 and 6/12 with or without glasses (lens power up to 4D), near vision Sn 0.6 and 0.6 where close work is needed, and a binocular vision test.
PwBD suitability is set per post. For many of these posts HI reads D, HH, MD reads Yes, LD reads OL, LC, DW, AAV, SD and SI (without neurological or limb dysfunction), and VI reads No.
See Para 4.0 for nationality and Para 12.0 for the employer's NOC. Applications aren't scrutinised in detail before document verification, and a claim found false at any point, even after joining, cancels the candidature.
Selection Process
The stages:
- First CBT, a screening test.
- Second CBT, for 15 times each community's vacancies at the RRB you chose, on normalised first-CBT marks. The Railways may change that multiple.
- Document verification, for as many as there are vacancies, on normalised second-CBT marks and your options.
- Medical examination and empanelment.
On equal marks the older candidate ranks higher; after that, alphabetical order of the given name.
Choose one RRB and set preferences for zones and posts there. Unmarked posts count as unwanted, and preferences can't be edited later. Applying twice, anywhere, rejects every application and can lead to debarment from RRB and RRC exams.
Originals must be produced at verification on the day. Allotment goes by option, merit, medical category and vacancy; after placement you can't fall back to a lower preference, and an unopted zone can be assigned in the administrative interest. The zonal railway, not the RRB, makes the appointment, after the medical and character and certificate checks. RRBs may draw further down the merit list to fill gaps, which creates no entitlement.
Salary
| Post | Junior Engineer, posts open to electronics candidates |
| Pay Level (7th CPC) | Level 6 |
| Initial pay | ₹35,400 |
Pay is the same Level 6 for every post in the CEN. Add DA, HRA by city class, Transport Allowance and railway allowances; subtract NPS and health contributions.
The posts sit mainly in Signal and Telecommunication, with others in the Electrical and Mechanical departments, across workshops, production units, design and drawing, and R&D. The syllabus mirrors that work: underground copper and optical fibre cable jointing in topic 1, and public address, electronic exchange, radar, cellular and satellite systems in topic 7.
How to Apply
Apply online through your chosen RRB's website, all linked from rrb.indianrailways.gov.in. You'll take a live photo during the form, with the camera at eye level.
| Category | Fee | Refunded if you sit the 1st Stage CBT |
|---|---|---|
| General | ₹500 | ₹400, less bank charges |
| SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, Economically Backward Class | ₹250 | All of it, less bank charges |
Pay online. The refund is paid only if you appear in the first CBT.
EBC here means Economically Backward Class, not OBC, EWS or a state Extremely Backward Class list. The proof (EBC certificate, BPL card, Izzat MST or a central poverty scheme certificate) must be dated on or before 13 September 2026 and shown in original at verification.
If your diploma combines Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics sub-streams, you may map to more than one Exam Group and must pick one before submitting. The 16 to 25 September 2026 modification window can't change your RRB or account details.
Participating Institutes
All 21 RRBs issue the CEN jointly under the Ministry of Railways, with the RRCB coordinating: Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bilaspur, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu, Kolkata, Malda, Mumbai, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Prayagraj, Ranchi, Secunderabad, Siliguri and Thiruvananthapuram (Para 16.0). You apply to exactly one.
| Posts | Level | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Engineer, various | 6 | Each listed in Annexure A with department, medical standard and PwBD suitability |
| Depot Material Superintendent | 6 | Engineering diploma in any branch |
| Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant | 6 | 35 posts, added by the corrigendum |
Electronics-group posts are spread across Signal and Telecommunication, Electrical and Mechanical departments. Annexure B gives provisional vacancies by RRB and zone.
Exam Centres
Both CBTs are online, at centres allotted by your RRB. Dates and cities aren't in the CEN; they're posted on the RRB site later. With a scribe you get 160 minutes in the second CBT, and scribe details go in between 26 and 30 September 2026. Verification and medical venues are notified by the RRB.

Age is reckoned on 1 January 2027; qualifications and EBC proof on 13 September 2026. This CEN was first flagged in Employment News on 25 July 2026, three weeks before the detailed notice. CBT dates will appear under Exam Schedule on your RRB's site.
Admit Card
RRB websites post updates under fixed headings, roughly in this order: Exam Schedule, City Intimation, E-Call Letters, Mock Test Link, answer keys with the Objection Tracker, Exam Results, Document Verification, Medical Examination, Selection List. Track the board you applied to from rrb.indianrailways.gov.in.
For verification, carry originals of your diploma or degree, Matriculation certificate, any category or EBC proof dated by 13 September 2026, and an NOC if employed.
Result
Results for each CBT, and the final Selection List, appear on the website of the RRB you chose, under Exam Results and Selection List. No dates are set yet for this CEN. Answer keys come before each result, through the Objection Tracker.
Cut Off
There are no cut-offs for CEN No. 04/2026 yet, since the CBTs haven't been held. RRBs publish them with each result on their own sites (links on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in).
They'll be in Merit Index terms, not raw marks, and vary by RRB because shortlisting is 15 times each board's own vacancies.
Preparation Tips
- Stage 1 isn't electronics. Maths, reasoning, awareness and Class 10 science decide whether you reach Stage 2.
- Practise arithmetic without a calculator; Stage 1 doesn't provide one.
- Guess only with good reason. Each wrong answer costs a third.
- Work out which third of the paper is new to you. An electronics diploma holder may never have written C; a CS graduate may never have handled op-amps or modulation. Start there.
- Learn the 8085 and assembly language, and C and C++ with data structures and DBMS.
- Don't skip Basic Electrical Engineering, especially earthing, its installation and testing.
- Collect the easy 20 on computers and environment in Stage 2; the computer part overlaps with your technical topics.
- Rank every post you'd take after reading its medical standard.
- Attend Stage 1 to get the fee back.
Sample Papers
No previous year papers are available from the RRBs, which don't keep a past-paper archive for a CEN. Each RRB site does post a Mock Test Link before the CBT, and answer keys via the Objection Tracker afterwards.
The official FAQs were released with the CEN on 13 August 2026. Annexure-VIII (C) details all ten topics, from OFC jointing to the 8085 and C++, which is the best base for practice.
