RRB JE EE Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
182 topics across 11 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
There's no separate "RRB JE Electrical" exam. The electrical Junior Engineer posts are part of the Railway Recruitment Boards' combined notice, CEN No. 04/2026, published on 13 August 2026. The same notice covers Depot Material Superintendent and, since Corrigendum No. 1 of 18 August, Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (35 posts).
| Pay | Level 6, initial pay ₹35,400 |
| Age | 18 to 33 on 1 January 2027 |
| Total vacancies, all RRBs | 4,029 after the corrigendum (3,993 originally) |
| Applications | 14 August to 13 September 2026 |
On the railways "electrical" covers several jobs, each a separate post: TRD (traction distribution, the overhead wires), TRS (traction rolling stock, the locomotives), EMU, General Services, Workshop, Production Unit, Design and Drawing, and Research and Development.
Two things to know straight away. The first paper has no electrical content at all; your branch is tested only in the 100-mark technical section of the second paper. And each wrong answer costs a third of a mark in both papers.

Exam Pattern
The pattern is common to every post in the CEN. Only the 100-mark Technical Abilities section changes by discipline; for you it's the Electrical and Allied Engineering syllabus.
| Stage | Questions and marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Stage CBT | 100 | 90 minutes |
| 2nd Stage CBT | 150 | 120 minutes (160 with a scribe) |
| 1st Stage CBT | Marks |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | 30 |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 25 |
| General Awareness | 15 |
| General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences to Class 10 CBSE) | 30 |
| 2nd Stage CBT | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Awareness | 15 |
| Physics and Chemistry | 15 |
| Basics of Computers and Applications | 10 |
| Basics of Environment and Pollution Control | 10 |
| Technical Abilities | 100 |
- Negative marking: one third of the question's marks (0.33 on a 1-mark question), in both stages. Three wrong answers wipe out a right one, which is harsher than the usual 0.25.
- Calculator: a virtual one on screen in the 2nd Stage only. None in the 1st.
- Pace: about 54 seconds a question in the 1st Stage, 48 in the 2nd.
- The CEN says the section split is indicative and the actual papers may vary.
Qualifying marks
| Category | Minimum in each CBT |
|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 40 per cent |
| OBC (NCL) and SC | 30 per cent |
| ST | 25 per cent |
Ex-servicemen follow their community's figure. PwBD candidates may get 2 marks' relaxation if there aren't enough of them for reserved posts.
Normalisation and the Merit Index
Multi-session papers are normalised. Then, so that the four Exam Groups can share one merit list, marks are converted to a Merit Index:
| Anchor | Marks | Merit Index score |
|---|---|---|
| Mq, general qualifying mark | 40 | 350 |
| Mt, mean of the top 0.1 per cent or top 10 in the paper, whichever is larger | Varies | 900 |
Your index sits between those two points, so it depends partly on how the top scorers in your own paper did.

Eligibility Criteria
Age: 18 to 33 on 1 January 2027, a date after applications close. Your date of birth must match your Matriculation or SSLC certificate; any difference disqualifies you.
| Category | Relaxation or upper limit |
|---|---|
| Ex-servicemen (SC and ST) | 8 years after deducting service |
| PwBD | 10 years UR and EWS, 13 OBC (NCL), 15 SC and ST |
| Serving Railway Group C and erstwhile Group D staff, and substitutes, with 3 years' service | Up to 40 UR and EWS, 43 OBC (NCL), 45 SC and ST |
| Staff of Railway canteens, cooperative societies and institutes | Length of service or 5 years, whichever is less |
| Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women not remarried | Up to 35 UR and EWS, 38 OBC (NCL), 40 SC and ST |
If you qualify on more than one ground you get the highest single relaxation, not the sum. SC, ST and OBC candidates applying against UR posts get none; PwBD candidates against UR posts get only the PwBD (UR) relaxation.
Qualification
Set post by post in Annexure A. For electrical posts it starts at a three-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering; several posts also accept a combination of sub-streams of Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering. You must hold it by 13 September 2026. If you're awaiting your final result, don't apply.
If your certificate is dated after the closing date, bring the consolidated marks sheet showing the result date, or all semester sheets with dates, or a Board or University letter giving the date.
Exam Group: Electrical Engineering and combinations of its own sub-streams go to the Electrical and Allied Engineering group, and nothing else does. It's narrow; instrumentation, communication and computing go to the Electronics group instead. If your qualifications map to more than one group, you pick one and stay eligible for all your opted posts.
Medical and PwBD
Each post has its own medical standard under Para 3.0 and Annexure A; electrical JE posts range from A3 through B1, B2 and C1, so a TRD post and a Workshop post can need different eyesight. Corrigendum No. 1 added standard B-2: distance vision 6/9 and 6/12 with or without glasses (lens power up to 4D), near vision Sn 0.6 and 0.6 where close work is needed, and a binocular vision test.
PwBD suitability (VI, HI, LD, OD, MD) is also per post. For many electrical posts HI reads D, HH, MD reads Yes, LD reads OL, LC, DW, AAV, SD and SI (both without neurological or limb dysfunction), and VI reads No.
Para 4.0 covers nationality; Para 12.0 asks for a No Objection Certificate if you're employed. Eligibility isn't checked in detail until document verification, and a false claim found at any stage, even later, ends your candidature.
Selection Process
- 1st Stage CBT (screening).
- 2nd Stage CBT: 15 times the community-wise vacancies of your RRB are called, on normalised 1st Stage marks. Railways can raise or lower that.
- Document verification: as many candidates as vacancies, on normalised 2nd Stage marks and your options.
- Medical exam, then empanelment.
Ties go to the older candidate, then alphabetical order of the given name (not surname).
One RRB, final options
You pick one RRB and rank zones and posts within it. A post you don't mark is treated as unwillingness. Options are final. Applying more than once, to the same or different RRBs, gets every application rejected and can bar you from future RRB and RRC exams.
After the merit list
Bring originals to document verification; there's no extra time. Zones are allotted by option, merit, medical standard and vacancies. Once you're placed, you lose your claim to lower preferences, and the RRB can allot a zone you didn't choose in the administrative interest. RRBs only recommend; the zonal railway issues the appointment, after the medical, certificate checks and a character verification. If posts go unfilled, RRBs can go further down the list, but that gives no one a right to a post.
Salary
| Post | Junior Engineer, electrical posts |
| Pay Level (7th CPC) | Level 6 |
| Initial pay | ₹35,400 |
Every post in the CEN, JE, DMS and CMA alike, is at Level 6. On top of the ₹35,400 basic come Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance by city class, Transport Allowance and railway allowances; NPS and health scheme contributions are deducted.
You'll work in the Electrical department of the zone or production unit you're allotted, in TRD, TRS, EMU, General Services, a workshop, a production unit, design or R&D. The corrigendum added one more JE / Electrical / TRS post at RRB Secunderabad for South Central Railway.
How to Apply
Apply online only, through the link on your chosen RRB's website (all reachable from rrb.indianrailways.gov.in). The form includes a live photo, so set the camera at eye level.
| Category | Fee | Refunded if you sit the 1st Stage CBT |
|---|---|---|
| General | ₹500 | ₹400, less bank charges |
| SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, Economically Backward Class | ₹250 | All of it, less bank charges |
Pay online by net banking, card or UPI. Refunds go only to those who sit the 1st Stage CBT.
EBC concession: EBC means Economically Backward Class here, not OBC, EWS or a state's Extremely Backward Class list. You need a valid EBC certificate, BPL card, Izzat MST or a central poverty programme certificate issued on or before 13 September 2026, and must show the original at document verification.
The modification window (16 to 25 September 2026) can't change your chosen RRB or your "Create an Account" details. Before ranking posts, read Annexure A: TRD, TRS, EMU and the workshop posts differ in work, medical standard and PwBD suitability.
Participating Institutes
The CEN is issued jointly by the 21 Railway Recruitment Boards under the Ministry of Railways: Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bilaspur, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu, Kolkata, Malda, Mumbai, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Prayagraj, Ranchi, Secunderabad, Siliguri and Thiruvananthapuram, with the RRCB coordinating (Para 16.0). You apply to one.
| Posts in the CEN | Level | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Engineer, various | 6 | Listed in Annexure A with department, medical standard and PwBD suitability |
| Depot Material Superintendent | 6 | Diploma in any engineering branch; unmapped qualifications choose any group except CMA |
| Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant | 6 | Added by the corrigendum, 35 posts, own Exam Group |
Electrical posts include JE / Electrical, JE / Electrical (Workshop), JE / Electrical / EMU, TRD, TRS and General Services, JE / Electrical / Design Drawing and Estimation, and JE / Design / Electrical. Vacancies by RRB and zone are in Annexure B and may still change.
Exam Centres
Both CBTs are online at centres the RRB allots. Dates and cities are announced on your RRB's website, not in the CEN. Candidates with a scribe get 160 minutes in the 2nd Stage instead of 120, and must enter scribe details between 26 and 30 September 2026. Document verification and the medical follow at venues your RRB notifies.

Admit Card
RRBs publish in this order under standing headings on each board's site: Exam Schedule, City Intimation, E-Call Letters, Mock Test Link, then answer keys with the Objection Tracker, results, document verification, medical and the Selection List. Watch the site of the one RRB you chose, reachable from rrb.indianrailways.gov.in.
For document verification bring your qualification certificates, Matriculation certificate, category or EBC proof dated by 13 September 2026, and an NOC if employed.
Result
Results for each stage, and the Selection List, go up on your chosen RRB's website under Exam Results and Selection List. No dates are fixed yet for this CEN. Answer keys and the Objection Tracker come first, after each CBT.
Cut Off
No cut-offs have been published for CEN No. 04/2026 yet. RRBs release them with each stage's result on the regional board websites (reachable from rrb.indianrailways.gov.in).
They're Merit Index figures, not raw marks, and they differ by RRB, because the 2nd Stage shortlist is 15 times the vacancies of each RRB.
Preparation Tips
- Prepare Stage 1 as a non-engineer. It's maths, reasoning, general awareness and Class 10 science. Machines and power systems won't help you get past it.
- Mental arithmetic matters. There's no calculator in Stage 1 and 30 marks of maths.
- Guess carefully. A third of a mark goes for every wrong answer.
- Read the IE Rules. They appear twice, under estimation and costing and under earthing.
- Don't underrate measurement. Two-wattmeter method, meters, megger, bridges, CT and PT, earth fault detection: it's dense.
- Find switchgear and protection. It's hidden inside topic 8: Buchholz relay, Merz-Price, HRC fuses, cable derating.
- Take the easy 20. Computers and environment in Stage 2 are narrow and quick to learn.
- Choose your RRB and rank every post you'd take, checking each one's medical standard first.
- Sit Stage 1 even if unprepared, to get the fee refund.
Sample Papers
RRBs don't keep a past-paper archive for JE recruitment, so no previous year papers are available from them. Before each CBT a Mock Test Link goes up on your RRB's site, showing the real interface and the Stage 2 calculator. After each CBT, answer keys appear with the Objection Tracker for a short window.
The official FAQs for this CEN (13 August 2026) answer common questions. The technical syllabus in Annexure-VIII (B) is specific enough to practise from directly.
