ICT Fundamentals for Libraries Questions and Answers

Answer: C

A blog is the nearest to a bulletin board service among the choices: a site where messages are posted and read by others, as on an electronic notice board. Picasa is a photo management and sharing tool, Google Talk is an instant messaging and chat service, and ooVoo is a video chat service, so none of them works as a bulletin board. The key gives Blog, option (C); the item is a loose recall question, and the key is followed.

Answer: D

A computer virus is a program that can manipulate or corrupt data, replicate itself by attaching copies to other files and programs, and damage the computer by deleting files, filling the memory or slowing the machine. Each of the first three statements is a true description of what a virus does, and none of them alone is the complete answer. Since all of them are true, the answer is All the above, option (D).

Answer: A

FTP, the File Transfer Protocol, is the protocol used to move files between computers over the Internet, for instance when uploading a page to a web server or downloading a document from an archive. SMTP, the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, is used to send electronic mail, and POP, the Post Office Protocol, is used to collect mail from a mail server. TCP/IP is the whole suite of protocols on which the Internet runs, and not the specific protocol for file transfer. The answer is FTP, option (A).

Answer: D

Xerography is a photocopying method, since it makes copies with light, but the name used for it is electrostatic, because the image is formed by electrostatic charges on a photoconductive drum or plate and the toner powder sticks to the charged parts. Diazographic copying uses light-sensitive diazo chemicals and thermographic copying uses heat, so they are different. Electrofax is a different process that copies on specially coated paper. The answer is Electrostatic, option (D).

Answer: D

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is stored on a chip in the computer. It holds the bootstrap program, which starts the computer and loads the operating system, and the routines that convert the characters typed on the keyboard to codes and handle other basic input and output. The operating system and application programs are not in the BIOS, they are loaded from disk. So (ii) and (iv) are correct, option (D), and the options with (i) or (iii) are wrong.

Answer: B

Netiquette is the code of good behaviour on the net, and it includes acting within the laws of cyberspace and of society, so (A) is true. Respect for other people's privacy is also part of netiquette, so failing to respect it is bad netiquette, which makes (R) true. The reason is one more rule of the same code, so both statements are true, option (B). The options that call the assertion or the reason false, or only one of them true, are wrong.

Answer: D

Open Systems Interconnection, the OSI reference model, provides a standard so that computer and communication equipment from different makers can be connected, so (A) is true. The reason is false: compatibility with OSI does not slow down a network printer, and a network printer is no slower for being OSI compatible. So (A) is true and (R) is false, option (D). The option calling both true takes the false reason, and the other options reject the true assertion.

Answer: B

An HTML file is a web format (iii), a PDF file is a text format, since it holds the text of a document (i), a JPG file is an image format (iv) and an AVI file is a film (video) format (ii). So the code is (iii), (i), (iv), (ii), option (B). Option (A) gives HTML the text format and PDF the film format, option (C) pairs JPG with film, and option (D) pairs HTML with the image format, so none of them fits the file types.

Answer: C

Facebook is a social networking site (ii), ResearchGate is an academic networking site (iii), ooVoo is a video networking site (i) and Flickr is a photo networking site (iv). So the code is (ii), (iii), (i), (iv), option (C). Option (A) pairs Facebook with video, option (B) pairs Facebook with photos, and option (D) pairs Facebook with the academic networking site, which is wrong because ResearchGate is the academic one.

Answer: C

The international body that coordinates the assignment of unique domain names and protocol addresses is ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It keeps the global domain name system and the address space working so that every name or address is unique.

IANA performs the actual technical function under ICANN, so it is not the coordinating body. IGF, the Internet Governance Forum, is only a forum for discussion of policy, and an ISP is a company that sells internet access.
