'A' started a business by investing some amount. 'B' joined 'A' after 4 months and invested thrice the amount of 'A'. 'C' joined them after 2 more months and invested double the amount of 'A'. If the profit at the end of the year is ₹ 84,000, then the share of 'B' in the profit (in ₹) is :

Answer: D
B's share is ₹ 42,000.
Profit is shared in proportion to capital multiplied by time. Let A invest x for 12 months. B invests 3x from the 5th month, for 8 months, and C invests 2x from the 7th month, for 6 months:
\[ \begin{aligned} A : B : C &= 12x : 24x : 12x \\ &= 1 : 2 : 1 \\ B &= \tfrac{2}{4} \times 84000 = 42000 \end{aligned} \]
₹ 21,000 is A's share, and C's. Ignoring the time each partner's money was invested gives 1 : 3 : 2, which happens to leave B's share unchanged here but would wrongly give A ₹ 14,000 and C ₹ 28,000.
