Robert Koch used a meat-infused nutrient medium for which one of the following purposes?
GATE Life Sciences - 2025,
Answer: A
Koch used meat-infused nutrient media to grow disease causing microorganisms.
Robert Koch's work rested on isolating a pathogen in pure culture, a step in his postulates. He grew bacteria such as the anthrax and tubercle bacilli on nutrient media made from meat extract, solidified first with gelatin and then, at the suggestion of Fanny Hesse, with agar, so that single colonies could be picked.
Showing that microorganisms are carried in the air was Pasteur's swan-neck flask experiment, and testing sterilization methods is associated with Pasteur and Tyndall. Screening soil microbes for antimicrobial activity belongs to the later antibiotic era of Waksman, not to Koch.
