If an adolescent’s height increases by 10% and his mass by 10%, by how much will his BMI change ?
Punjab Civil Service - 2021,
Answer: C
The BMI changes by about minus 9%.
Mass is multiplied by 1.1, and height by 1.1, so the square of the height is multiplied by 1.21:
\[ \begin{aligned} \text{new BMI} &= \frac{1.1\,m}{(1.1\,h)^2} \\ &= \frac{1}{1.1} \times \frac{m}{h^2} \\ &\approx 0.909 \times \text{BMI} \end{aligned} \]
That is a fall of about 9.1%.
'Plus 10%' and 'Plus 11%' forget that height enters the formula squared, so the larger denominator wins. 'Minus 10%' treats division by 1.1 as subtracting 10%, but dividing by 1.1 lowers a value by only about 9.1%.
