Which property must a nucleus possess to give an NMR signal?
Answer: A
A nucleus is NMR active only when its spin quantum number I is not zero, because only then does it carry a magnetic moment that can take up different orientations in a field. Carbon-12 and oxygen-16 have I = 0 and are silent, which is why natural abundance carbon work uses the 1.1 per cent carbon-13 instead. An even proton count does not decide the matter on its own, nuclear charge is irrelevant, and the electric dipole moment belongs to infrared and microwave spectroscopy rather than to magnetic resonance. Spin is the whole entry requirement.
