Direction for [ Question No: 1 To 5 ] :

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below :

At this critical juncture when human existence is faced with many crises, the only way to survive is to pick up the threads of understanding among individuals, communities and nations, and highly diversified ecosystems, in order to establish peace and harmony between the two, on a spiritual foundation.

However, due to lack of proper understanding of the meaning of spiritual association between the human-beings and the nature as described in our scriptures, religious traditions are often overpowered by fanaticism and various kinds of material goals. Thus religions sometimes clash with each other and humanity and nature are exposed to under constant danger.

So under the present scenario, it is very important that religious traditions should imbibe a scientific and rational spirit.

On the other hand, we are all aware that although recent advancements in science and technology have brought tremendous benefit to humanity, they have also posed self-inflicting dangers to humanity.

We are threatened by self-inflicted swiftly moving environmental alterations about whose long term biological and ecological consequences we are still painfully ignorant, as for example, depletion of the protective ozone layer, a global warming unprecedented in the last one hundred fifty millennia, the rapid obliteration of bio-diversity and the prospect of a global nuclear war that would put at risk most of the population of the Earth. There may be other danger too, of which we are still ignorant. Individually and collectively, they represent a trap being set for human species, a trap we are setting ourselves in, with advancement of science and technology on one hand and derailment of human ethical values in the application of science & technology on the other.

Here then comes the issue of ethical concerns. Ethical values, incidentally, have not been able to keep pace with the explosive development of science and technology. Thus, there is an important need to generate ethical guidelines in our scientific research based on age-old spiritual wisdom, especially in the field of bio-engineering and biotechnology. A balanced approach between scientific temper and spiritual values should be ensured. Although, there have been several attempts preserving world natural/biotic ecosystems and maintaining world-peace by religious leaders, scientific community and political groups, progress towards such attempts shall remain a dream if a cooperative effort of science, spirituality and human organisations does not take place.

Answer: B

Human existence is at a critical juncture because of the lack of understanding among individuals, communities and nations. The passage begins by saying that, with human existence faced with many crises, the only way to survive is to pick up the threads of understanding among individuals, communities, nations and the ecosystems. Explosive development of science and technology, religious fanaticism and material goals are all named elsewhere as causes of danger, but they are presented as effects or contributing factors, not as the reason for the juncture itself. Option B is correct.

Exam Year(s)

UGC NET - 2013,

Answer: A

The understanding of the religious scriptures is often overshadowed by fanaticism. The second paragraph says that, for lack of proper understanding of the spiritual association between human beings and nature described in the scriptures, religious traditions are often overpowered by fanaticism and various kinds of material goals. Scientific innovations and technological development are discussed in a different context, as sources of danger to humanity, and rational appraisal is what the passage wants religious traditions to adopt, so it cannot be what overshadows them. Option A is correct.

Exam Year(s)

UGC NET - 2013,

Answer: D

The passage says that human existence with peace can be built on a balance of scientific and spiritual progress. It speaks of the need for a balanced approach between scientific temper and spiritual values, and of a cooperative effort of science, spirituality and human organisations as the condition for protecting ecosystems and world peace. Technological progress alone, or material and scientific progress without the spiritual side, is exactly the lopsided path that the author blames for the dangers. Option C pairs spiritual with material progress, but the passage's contrast is between spiritual values and scientific temper, so option D is correct.

Answer: D

A trap being set for the human species stands for all of the dangers listed in the passage. The passage names the depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, the loss of biodiversity (ecological imbalances) and the prospect of a global nuclear war, and adds that there may be other dangers of which we are still ignorant. It says that individually and collectively they represent the trap. Since the options that name only the ozone layer, only ecological imbalances, or only nuclear war each leave out part of the list, option D, all the above, is correct.

Exam Year(s)

UGC NET - 2013,

Answer: A

The tone of the passage is analytical, according to the key. The author takes the dangers that science and religion each carry, sets out their causes, and then argues for a balance between scientific temper and spiritual values, so the passage is reasoned and examines causes and effects rather than only describing or telling a story. It does contain some advice, which is why prescriptive is the nearest rival, but the greater part of the text is analysis of the problem. Descriptive and narrative do not fit, because the passage neither lists features nor relates events. Option A is the keyed answer.

The post liberalized and globalised Indian economy is witnessing shrinking role of state and growing role of Corporate and Business in overall development of country. Corporate with their wider reach, professionalism, innovation and wealth have the ability to influence the pace of growth and development. In recent survey it was found that the public expectations from corporate and business are growing. Indians feel that business sector must play a wider and more expansive societal role. In addition to providing good quality products at reasonable prices, companies should strive to make their operations environmentally sound, adhere to high labour standards, reduce human rights abuses and mitigate poverty. Corporate Social responsibility in the past few decades has intrigued not only the scholars but the practioners as well. It is essentially a concept whereby companies decide voluntarily to contribute to a better society and a cleaner environment. Companies consider themselves as an integral part of the society and act in a socially responsible way. Till very recently it was viewed as philanthropic activity indulged into only when the firms were in jeopardy. But it is now viewed to be inclusive, broad and diverse. CSR is now viewed as integral part of business strategy to minimize the business risks linked to uncertainty. Most of the multinational Corporates have their CSR wing and department exclusively dedicated for doing community development and CSR activities directly or indirectly in the vicinity of their operations. They recruit professionals from social work, rural development and other developmental fields to undertake and manage the CSR activities of company. It is observed that companies whose operations directly impact the nature like mining, manufacturing, power generations etc. have CSR wing quite active to tackle the grievances of nearby population and engage the stakeholders. In green field projects, we have seen corporate giant and Govt. struggling hard to get the land acquisitions and Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R & R) issues solved, here also CSR professionals are in great demand. This is hard to clarify due to the diverse roles and range of disciplines involved. Though the major skills required for successful CSR Professional are business skills, people skills and technical skills. From above three skills, following six core competencies are listed for managers involved with CSR in organizations viz. Answer: B

According to the passage, companies voluntarily contribute to a better society because they consider themselves an integral part of society and so act in a socially responsible way. This is the reason given in the passage for corporate social responsibility.

Improving business outcomes, improving image and finding shareholders are not given as the reason. The passage says the old view was that CSR was done as philanthropy when firms were in trouble, and that it is now seen as part of business strategy to reduce risk.

Answer: A

The passage says that most of the multinational corporates have a CSR wing or department exclusively dedicated to community development and CSR activities, staffed with professionals from social work, rural development and other fields. So CSR is best managed by a separate wing or department.

The chief executive, the human resource department and the finance department are not mentioned in the passage as the managers of CSR, so the answer follows from the statement about the dedicated wing.
