RRB JE CE Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
251 topics across 26 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Railway civil Junior Engineers are recruited through a single notice shared with other disciplines: CEN No. 04/2026, issued by the Railway Recruitment Boards on 13 August 2026. It also covers Depot Material Superintendent and, after Corrigendum No. 1 (18 August 2026), 35 posts of Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant.
| Pay | Level 6, starting at ₹35,400 |
| Age | 18 to 33 as on 1 January 2027 |
| Vacancies across all RRBs | 4,029, raised from 3,993 by the corrigendum |
| Apply | 14 August to 13 September 2026 |
You don't apply for "JE Civil" as such. Annexure A lists named posts, among them JE / Civil, JE / P. Way, JE / Bridge and JE / Design, each with its own medical standard and PwBD suitability.
The first computer test has no civil engineering in it. Your subject shows up only in the second test, as 100 marks of Technical Abilities. Wrong answers cost a third of a mark throughout, and ₹400 of the ₹500 fee (or all of a ₹250 fee) comes back if you sit the first test.

Exam Pattern
Every post in the CEN sits the same two tests. What changes is the Technical Abilities section: civil candidates answer the Civil and Allied Engineering syllabus.
| Stage | Questions and marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Stage CBT | 100 | 90 minutes |
| 2nd Stage CBT | 150 | 120 minutes (160 with a scribe) |
| 1st Stage CBT | Marks |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | 30 |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 25 |
| General Awareness | 15 |
| General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences to Class 10 CBSE) | 30 |
| 2nd Stage CBT | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Awareness | 15 |
| Physics and Chemistry | 15 |
| Basics of Computers and Applications | 10 |
| Basics of Environment and Pollution Control | 10 |
| Technical Abilities | 100 |
- Wrong answers: minus one third of the marks for that question (0.33 on a 1-mark question) in both tests, against the 0.25 common elsewhere.
- Calculator: on-screen in the second test only.
- Time: roughly 54 seconds per question in the first test, 48 in the second.
- Section splits are indicative; the real papers can vary a little.
Minimum marks
| Category | Minimum in each CBT |
|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 40 per cent |
| OBC (NCL) and SC | 30 per cent |
| ST | 25 per cent |
Ex-servicemen use their community's percentage. PwBD candidates can get up to 2 marks' relaxation where reserved posts would otherwise go unfilled.
How rank is worked out
Marks from multi-session papers are normalised first. Because candidates from all four Exam Groups end up on one combined list, normalised marks are then turned into a Merit Index:
| Anchor | Marks | Merit Index score |
|---|---|---|
| Mq, general qualifying mark | 40 | 350 |
| Mt, mean of the top 0.1 per cent or top 10 in the paper, whichever is larger | Varies | 900 |
So the civil field's own top scorers help set where you land.

Eligibility Criteria
Age: 18 to 33, counted on 1 January 2027, which falls after the closing date. The date of birth you enter has to match your Matriculation or SSLC certificate exactly, or you're out.
| Category | Relaxation or upper limit |
|---|---|
| Ex-servicemen (SC and ST) | 8 years after deducting service |
| PwBD | 10 years UR and EWS, 13 OBC (NCL), 15 SC and ST |
| Serving Railway Group C and erstwhile Group D staff, and substitutes, with 3 years' service | Up to 40 UR and EWS, 43 OBC (NCL), 45 SC and ST |
| Staff of Railway canteens, cooperative societies and institutes | Length of service or 5 years, whichever is less |
| Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women not remarried | Up to 35 UR and EWS, 38 OBC (NCL), 40 SC and ST |
Only the single largest relaxation applies. Reserved candidates who apply against UR posts get no relaxation, and PwBD candidates in that position get only the PwBD (UR) allowance.
Qualification
Annexure A sets it per post: a three-year Diploma in Civil Engineering or a civil degree, or permitted combinations of civil sub-streams, depending on the post. It must be in hand by 13 September 2026; anyone still waiting for a final result shouldn't apply. Where your certificate carries a later date, bring marks sheets showing when the result was declared, or a letter from the Board or University.
Exam Group: Civil Engineering, its sub-stream combinations and the three-year B.Sc. in Civil Engineering all fall in the Civil and Allied Engineering group. If you hold qualifications in more than one group, choose one; you keep eligibility for every post you opt for.
Medical and PwBD
Medical standards (Para 3.0) are set per post in Annexure A, from A3 through B1, B2 and C1, so two civil posts can ask for different fitness. Corrigendum No. 1 added standard B-2: distance vision 6/9 and 6/12 with or without glasses (lens power up to 4D), near vision Sn 0.6 and 0.6 where close work is needed, and a binocular vision test.
PwBD suitability is listed per post under VI, HI, LD, OD and MD. For many civil posts LD covers OL, LC, DW, AAV, SD and SI (without neurological or limb dysfunction), and VI is marked No.
Nationality rules are in Para 4.0, the NOC for employed candidates in Para 12.0. RRBs accept applications provisionally and check documents only at verification; anything false, found then or later, ends the candidature.
Selection Process
Four stages, with the second CBT doing most of the sorting:
- First CBT, to screen.
- Second CBT for 15 times each community's vacancies at your RRB, picked on normalised first-stage marks (the Railways may adjust the multiple).
- Document verification for as many people as there are posts, on second-stage marks and options.
- Medical, then empanelment.
Equal marks are split by age, older first, then by given name alphabetically.
You apply to a single RRB and rank zones and posts inside it. Leave a post unticked and you're taken as not wanting it. Options can't be changed afterwards, and a second application anywhere voids all of them and risks a ban from RRB and RRC exams.
At verification you need originals on the day, with no extension. Zone allotment follows your options, merit, medical category and vacancies; once placed you drop off your lower choices, and the RRB may post you to an unchosen zone if administration needs it. The appointment letter comes from the zonal railway, not the RRB, after medical, certificate and character checks. Shortfalls can be filled from further down the list, without creating any right to a post.
Salary
| Post | Junior Engineer, civil posts |
| Pay Level (7th CPC) | Level 6 |
| Initial pay | ₹35,400 |
All posts in this CEN share Level 6, so the starting basic doesn't depend on discipline. DA, HRA by city class, Transport Allowance and railway allowances are added; NPS and health contributions come off.
Civil JEs work in the Engineering department: permanent way, bridges, production units, design and drawing, or research and development, in whichever zone you're allotted.
How to Apply
Applications are online only, on the website of the RRB you choose (links on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in). A live photograph is taken during the form; keep the camera at eye level.
| Category | Fee | Refunded if you sit the 1st Stage CBT |
|---|---|---|
| General | ₹500 | ₹400, less bank charges |
| SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, Economically Backward Class | ₹250 | All of it, less bank charges |
Fees are paid online. Only candidates who turn up for the first CBT get the refund.
The Economically Backward Class concession isn't OBC, EWS or a state Extremely Backward Class certificate. It needs an EBC certificate, BPL card, Izzat MST or central poverty programme certificate dated no later than 13 September 2026, with the original shown at verification.
Corrections are allowed from 16 to 25 September 2026 for a fee, but not to your RRB or your account details. Civil posts differ in department, medical standard and PwBD suitability even with the same qualification, so go through Annexure A before ranking them.
Participating Institutes
Twenty-one RRBs under the Ministry of Railways issue the CEN together, coordinated by the RRCB: Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bilaspur, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu, Kolkata, Malda, Mumbai, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Prayagraj, Ranchi, Secunderabad, Siliguri and Thiruvananthapuram (Para 16.0). Pick one.
| Posts | Level | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Engineer, various | 6 | Annexure A gives each post's department, medical standard and PwBD suitability |
| Depot Material Superintendent | 6 | Engineering diploma in any branch |
| Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant | 6 | 35 posts, added by the corrigendum |
Civil posts sit in the Engineering department (P. Way, Bridge, Production, R&D, Design and Drawing) and include JE / Civil, JE / P. Way, JE / Bridge and JE / Design. RRB and zone-wise vacancies are in Annexure B and are provisional.
Exam Centres
Both tests are computer based at RRB-allotted centres. The CEN carries no dates or cities; these come later through your RRB's site. Scribe users get 160 minutes for the second test and must register scribe details from 26 to 30 September 2026. Verification and medical venues are notified separately.

The age date is 1 January 2027; the qualification and EBC proof date is 13 September 2026. The Employment News indicative notice came out on 25 July 2026, three weeks ahead of the full CEN. Test dates will be posted under Exam Schedule on each RRB site.
Admit Card
Each RRB posts, in sequence: Exam Schedule, City Intimation, E-Call Letters, Mock Test Link, answer keys and Objection Tracker, results, then verification, medical and Selection List. Follow the RRB you applied to, via rrb.indianrailways.gov.in.
Take to verification your diploma or degree certificates, Matriculation certificate, category or EBC document dated by 13 September 2026, and an NOC if you're employed.
Result
Each RRB posts results and the final Selection List on its own website under Exam Results and Selection List. Nothing is dated yet for this CEN. After each test, answer keys open first through the Objection Tracker.
Cut Off
Cut-offs for CEN No. 04/2026 aren't out yet; there hasn't been an exam. Each RRB publishes them alongside its stage results (find your board via rrb.indianrailways.gov.in).
Expect Merit Index figures rather than marks, and different numbers at each RRB, since shortlisting runs at 15 times that RRB's own vacancies.
Preparation Tips
- Stage 1 is school maths and science. Structural analysis won't get you through it; arithmetic, reasoning and Class 10 science will.
- No calculator in Stage 1, so practise fast mental maths for its 30 marks.
- Skip what you don't know. Every wrong answer costs a third.
- Study railway engineering properly. Gauges, permanent way, track geometrics, branching of tracks, yards and track maintenance are in topic 19, and general civil books cover highways far better than railways.
- Learn the CAD topic. AutoCAD, Auto Civil and 3D Max are named.
- Read Contracts and Accounts once. Tenders, payment and specifications are easy marks.
- Don't ignore the 20 non-engineering marks in Stage 2 on computers and environment.
- Rank every civil post you'd accept after checking its medical standard.
- Turn up for Stage 1, or you lose the refund.
Sample Papers
No previous year papers are available from the RRBs; they don't keep a past-paper archive for a CEN. What they do publish is a Mock Test Link on each RRB site before the CBT, and answer keys through the Objection Tracker after it.
The official FAQs came out with the CEN on 13 August 2026. Annexure-VIII (A) spells out all 24 civil topics, down to re-baring and AutoCAD, which is enough to build practice from.
