The curriculum of EVS can be made much richer and more creative only if it is based on the principle of moving from the concrete to the abstract. Which of the following is indicating the principle of concrete to abstract in the context of learning EVS ?
(i) The knowledge of the class should be linked to the children's own life experience.
(ii) The natural and social environment of the child should be explained first.
(iii) Emphasis should be placed on the need to protect the child's natural environment.
(iv) Emphasis should be given on the participation of children in the knowledge construction of children.
Choose the correct option :
CTET - 2026,
Answer: A
The answer is (i) and (iv).
Moving from concrete to abstract means starting from what children can see, touch and have experienced, and building general ideas from it. Linking classroom knowledge to children's own life experiences (i) starts from the concrete. Involving children in constructing knowledge themselves (iv) lets them move, through their own activity, from those concrete experiences to the more abstract idea.
Statement (ii) makes the teacher explain the environment first, which is telling rather than letting children work from the concrete. Statement (iii) is about protecting the environment, a value to be developed, not a principle of how learning moves from concrete to abstract. Options with (ii) or (iii) are therefore wrong.
