Suppose X is a continuous random variable having the following probability density function :
\(f(x) = C(4x - 2x^{2}),\ 0 \lt x \lt 2\)
\(= 0,\) otherwise
What is the value of \(P[X \gt 1]\) ?
MH SET - 2020, SET Exam - 2020,
Answer: C
\(P[X \gt 1] = \) 1/2.
The density is proportional to \(4x - 2x^{2} = 2x(2 - x)\) on (0, 2). Replacing \(x\) by \(2 - x\) leaves it unchanged, so the density is symmetric about \(x = 1\), and half the probability lies on each side of 1.
Directly: \(\int_{0}^{2} (4x - 2x^{2})dx = 8 - 16/3 = 8/3\), so \(C = 3/8\), and
\[ \begin{aligned} P[X \gt 1] &= \tfrac{3}{8}\int_{1}^{2} (4x - 2x^{2})dx \\ &= \tfrac{3}{8}\left(6 - \tfrac{14}{3}\right) = \tfrac{1}{2} \end{aligned} \]
C/2 leaves the constant unevaluated, and 2/3 and 1/4 do not respect the symmetry.
