WBPSC Eligibility, Important Dates and Practice Questions
181 topics across 6 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
The Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC, often written PSC WB) recruits for the state government's civil services and posts. Its office is at 161-A, S. P. Mukherjee Road, Kolkata 700026, and everything, from advertisements to admit cards and results, goes through psc.wb.gov.in.
It runs a few large recurring exams and many small post-by-post recruitments:
- WBCS (Executive) etc. Examination for the state civil service and allied Group A to D services.
- Clerkship Examination for Lower Division Assistants and Clerks, Madhyamik level.
- Miscellaneous Services Recruitment Examination for a set of graduate-level officer posts.
- West Bengal Judicial Service Examination for Civil Judge (Junior Division).
- West Bengal Audit and Accounts Service Examination, plus stenographer and reporter exams.
- Single-post recruitments such as Industrial Development Officer, Motor Vehicles Inspector, Food Sub-Inspector and ICDS Supervisor, usually a screening test and an interview.
Cycles run long. Exams are named by the year of the advertisement, and an exam year's final list often comes two or three years later.

Eligibility Criteria
Each advertisement sets its own qualification and age, but a few rules apply across WBPSC exams:
- You must read, write and speak Bengali, unless your mother tongue is Nepali. Others are tested on it at the interview or typing stage.
- Reservation for SC, ST, OBC and EWS is only for candidates of West Bengal with certificates from West Bengal authorities. Candidates from other states compete as general.
- Age relaxation is usually 5 years for SC and ST and 3 for OBC (non-creamy layer) of West Bengal, and up to 45 for PwBD.
- Age is taken only from the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate.
Selection Process
The big exams have stages: an objective preliminary or Part-I that only screens, a written (conventional) main, and a personality test or typing test. Single-post recruitments usually use a screening test, or just shortlisting by marks, and an interview. Most advertisements also fix a minimum aggregate by category, commonly 40% for UR, 38% for OBC, 35% for SC and 30% for ST and PwBD. MCQ papers carry negative marking.
How to Apply
- Register once on One Time Registration, then apply for each advertisement from your account.
- Typical fees are ₹110 for Madhyamik-level exams such as Clerkship and ₹160 for graduate-level ones such as Miscellaneous. SC and ST candidates of West Bengal and PwBD candidates (40% or more) are exempt; OBC candidates pay.
- Most advertisements now have a one-time edit window just after the closing date.
