Which surfaces are used for tracer transport studies in the stratosphere?
Answer: A
Because stratospheric motion is very nearly adiabatic on timescales of days to weeks, tracers move along isentropic surfaces and analysing the transport on those surfaces separates the fast quasi-horizontal mixing from the slow diabatic ascent. Potential vorticity is then used as a coordinate within the surface, giving the equivalent latitude framework used in ozone studies. A single measurement chosen to respond to the one asymmetry beats several that respond to shared behaviour.
