Library Automation and Digital Libraries Questions and Answers

Q: Who founded JSTOR in the year 1995 ?

JSTOR was founded by William G. Bowen.William G. Bowen, then president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a former president of Princeton University, started JSTOR in 1995 to digitise the back runs of scholarly journals, saving library shelf space and improving access to older literature.Larry Page co-founded Google, Eugene Garfield founded the Institute for Scientific Information and the citation indexes, and Marshall Breeding is a library technology consultant and writer.

Q: Assertion (A) : Web scale discovery service provides a 'single interface' to search all resources of the library.Reason (R) : It brings results from all databases all over the world.Codes :

(A) is true but (R) is false.A web-scale discovery service gives a single search interface over the library's catalogue, its subscribed databases, e-journals and repositories, using a central index, so the assertion is true.It does not bring results from all databases in the world. It searches the content the service provider has indexed and the library has access to; resources outside the index, or those the library does not subscribe to, are not covered. So the reason is false.

Q: Arrange the following library software according to their year of origin :(i) Php Mylibrary(ii) ABCD(iii) Koha(iv) New GenlibCodes :

The keyed answer is (iii) (i) (iv) (ii): Koha, PhpMyLibrary, NewGenLib, ABCD.Koha was first written in 1999-2000 for the Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand, the earliest of the four. PhpMyLibrary was registered as a SourceForge project in October 2001. NewGenLib, developed by Verus Solutions of Hyderabad, appeared in 2005 and was released as open source in 2008. ABCD (Automation of Libraries and Documentation Centres, from BIREME and the Pan American Health Organization) came later still, around 2009. The PhpMyLibrary date comes from its SourceForge record; the NewGenLib and ABCD years could not be checked and are the least certain part.Options A and D put PhpMyLibrary before Koha, or reverse the order entirely. Option C places NewGenLib before PhpMyLibrary, which the dates above do not support.

Q: ROAR was financially supported by .................. .

ROAR was supported by JISC.The Registry of Open Access Repositories, maintained at the University of Southampton, lists open access repositories worldwide and tracks their growth. Its development was funded by JISC, the UK's Joint Information Systems Committee, as part of its support for open access infrastructure. The Mellon Foundation, the Gates Foundation and MIT were not its funders, so the other options are wrong.

Q: Which of the following organization is member of "Keeper's Registry" ?

The member of the Keepers Registry is Hathi Trust. The Keepers Registry, run by the ISSN International Centre, records which archiving agencies preserve which e-journals, so libraries can see whether content is safely archived. Its contributing archiving agencies include Portico, CLOCKSS, LOCKSS networks, national libraries and HathiTrust, the large digital library of research institutions. The Mellon and Gates foundations are funders, not archiving agencies, and IISc Bangalore is not listed as one of the registry's archiving members.

Q: The linked data is built upon the standard web technologies such as ................... .(i) HTTP(ii) RDF(iii) URI(iv) FTPCodes :

Linked data is built on (i) HTTP, (ii) RDF and (iii) URI.Tim Berners-Lee's linked data principles are: use URIs to name things, use HTTP URIs so that they can be looked up, provide useful information about them in standards such as RDF (and SPARQL), and include links to other URIs. So HTTP, RDF and URIs are its building blocks.FTP, the file transfer protocol, is not part of the linked data stack, so codes including (iv) are wrong.

Q: Assertion (A) : New Genlib is a freely available software.Reason (R) : New Genlib can be customized depending on the requirement of libraries.Codes :

Both (A) and (R) are true.NewGenLib, an integrated library management system developed by Verus Solutions with the Kesoju Sanskriti Foundation in India, was released as free and open source software in 2008, so it is freely available.Because it is open source, libraries can modify and customise it to suit their requirements, so the reason is also true. The key asks only whether both statements hold.

Q: Who developed a Library Software Package "Maitrayee" ?

The answer is CALIBNET.Maitrayee was the library software developed for CALIBNET, the Calcutta Library Network, in collaboration with CMC Ltd, to run the network's shared catalogue and services on a relational database. The other networks are associated with different software: INFLIBNET developed SOUL for university libraries, DELNET runs its own union catalogue services in Delhi, and BONET, the Bombay Library Network, is not the developer of Maitrayee.

OSS offers the following softwares using cloud computing :

(i) Koha
(ii) Ex-Libris
(iii) D-Space
(iv) Greenstone

Codes :

A.(i) and (ii) are correct
B.(ii) and (iii) are correct
C.(i) and (iii) are correct
D.(ii) and (iv) are correct

Exam Year(s)

MH SET - 2021, SET Exam - 2021,

Answer: C

The open source software offered through cloud computing is (i) Koha and (iii) D-Space.

Koha, the open source integrated library system, and DSpace, the open source repository platform, are both offered as cloud-hosted services by vendors and service providers (for example DSpaceDirect and hosted Koha), so libraries can use them without running their own servers.

Ex Libris is a commercial company whose products, such as Alma, are proprietary, not open source, so codes including (ii) are wrong; the key does not count Greenstone among these.
