GATE EE Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
275 topics across 22 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
GATE EE is the Electrical Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Every year one of eight institutes (IISc and the IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) organises GATE for the Ministry of Education; for GATE 2027 it is IIT Madras.
EE drew 81,947 registrations and 65,801 candidates in 2026, all in one session. The GATE site's list of PSUs that use the score is full of power companies, including NTPC, POWERGRID, Grid-India, DVC and NPCIL. It is also the entry route to M.Tech and PhD programmes in power, machines, control and power electronics.
Applications for 2027 are closed. The paper is in February 2027, and results follow on 19 March 2027. Scores last three years.

Eligibility Criteria
Third-year (or later) undergraduates and graduates with any government-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities may apply. Master's students in science or MCA are eligible from year one, and AMIE candidates once Section A is through. GATE sets no age limit.
An electrical degree isn't required to take the paper; it will be required by most PSUs that hire on EE scores.
How to Apply
| Category | One paper, regular | Two papers, regular | One paper, late fee | Two papers, late fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Female, SC, ST, PwD | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹1,500 | ₹2,500 |
| Everyone else, including foreign nationals | ₹2,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹2,500 | ₹4,500 |
The only route was the GOAPS portal. IIT Madras recommended a verified DigiLocker login for Indian applicants and captured a live photograph during registration. GOAPS stays open for changes to category, paper and cities until 21 October 2026, generally at ₹500 a paper.
Participating Institutes
- M.Tech and PhD: IITs and IISc through COAP, NITs through CCMT. GATE-qualified M.Tech students at government-supported institutes get ₹12,400 a month.
- PSUs: NTPC, POWERGRID, Grid-India, DVC, NPCIL, Chenab Valley Power Projects, BHEL, OPGC and Coal India are among the companies on the GATE site's list. Check each advertisement for the papers it accepts that year.
Exam Centres
Tests run at centres in more than 300 cities. Each candidate gave three city preferences inside the zone of their first choice. Final allotment, announced 4 January 2027, may fall outside those preferences if IIT Madras runs out of seats.
Important Dates
Below is IIT Madras's GATE 2027 calendar. Any date can still move.
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Application portal (GOAPS) opened | 2 September 2026 |
| Regular registration closed | 5 October 2026 |
| Late fee registration closed | 12 October 2026 |
| Special late fee window | 15 October 2026, 10:30 AM to 16 October 2026, 10:29 AM |

| Exam city announced | 4 January 2027 |
| Admit card | not yet announced |
| Exam days | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 |
| Result | 19 March 2027 |
There are two sittings a day, 9:30 AM–12:30 PM and 2:30 PM–5:30 PM. The EE slot will be published on the GATE site.
Admit Card
It will be on GOAPS; the release date is to be announced. Carry a printout and the original ID from your application. You can be seated 40 minutes before the paper and cannot log in once 15 minutes have passed.
Result
Results are scheduled for 19 March 2027 on GOAPS. Expect a provisional answer key and a paid challenge window before that. Your GATE Score (out of 1000) is valid for three years. Download the scorecard while it's free; later it costs ₹500, and from 1 January 2028 it isn't available at all.
Cut Off
| GATE 2026, EE | Figure |
|---|---|
| Registered | 81,947 |
| Appeared | 65,801 |
| Qualifying mark, General | 27.7 |
| Qualifying mark, OBC-NCL / EWS | 24.9 |
| Qualifying mark, SC / ST / PwD | 18.4 |
These are the GATE qualifying marks, not admission or job cut-offs. GATE takes the mean plus one standard deviation for General (between 25 and 40), then 0.9 times that for OBC-NCL/EWS and two-thirds for SC/ST/PwD. PSU shortlists for EE usually need far more.
Preparation Tips
- Machines and power systems are the biggest EE sections. Load flow, faults and transformer tests come up most years.
- Circuits and signals are the foundation for control and power electronics, so finish them early.
- Power electronics is formula-heavy and quick to revise. Keep it for the last month if pressed.
- Measurements is short. Bridges and instrument transformers cover much of it.
- Attempt all MSQs and NATs; there's no penalty on them.
- Solve the EE 2024–2026 papers from the GATE download page against the clock.
