GATE ME Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

302 topics across 26 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

GATE ME is the Mechanical Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, a three-hour computer based test run jointly by IISc Bangalore and the seven older IITs for the National Coordination Board, MoE. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras.

It isn't a recruitment exam or, on its own, an admission test. It gives you a score valid for three years that institutes and public sector employers use on their own terms.

ME is the broadest paper: engineering mechanics and machine design, fluids, heat transfer and thermodynamics, manufacturing, metrology, production planning and operations research. Even its Engineering Mathematics covers linear algebra, multivariable calculus, differential equations, complex variables, probability and numerical methods, so those 13 marks come from a far wider field than in most papers.

The syllabus was revised for 2027, and Additive Manufacturing is now a named topic in Section 4.

MSQ, multiple selectone or more optionsno penalty
NAT, numerical answertyped on a virtual keypadno penalty

Only MCQs carry a penalty, so never leave an MSQ or NAT blank. MSQ has no partial credit: you need every correct option and no wrong one. An on-screen virtual calculator is provided; physical calculators aren't allowed.

Two papers

With ME as your first paper, the second can be AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA or XE, and nothing else. The pairing works both ways.

  • Your degree doesn't have to match the paper you sit.
How to Apply

Fee, per paper

CategoryRegular windowExtended (late fee) window
Female / SC / ST / PwBDRs 1,000Rs 1,500
All others, including foreign nationalsRs 2,000Rs 2,500

Two papers cost double: Rs 2,000 / Rs 4,000 in the regular window, Rs 2,500 / Rs 4,500 in the extended one. Every woman pays the concessional fee, whatever her category. PwBD means Person with Benchmark Disability.

The portal

Apply through GOAPS, the GATE Online Application Processing System, from the organising institute's site. GATE 2027 adds live facial verification and DigiLocker to registration. A paid rectification window after the closing date lets you correct details already submitted. It isn't a second chance to register.

Participating Institutes

Admission

GATE scores are used for M.Tech, M.E., M.S. and direct PhD admission at the IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and many central and state institutions, and for MoE assistantships. The IITs and IISc admit through COAP, which lets you hold one offer at a time; NITs and IIITs through CCMT. Both need separate registration. A GATE score alone admits nobody.

Recruitment

More PSUs recruit mechanical engineers through GATE than any other discipline: IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL, ONGC, NTPC, PowerGrid, BHEL, BARC, ISRO, AAI, NHPC and THDC among them. ME also has the largest field, so a score that would get a call in a smaller paper may not here. Each PSU sets its own rules in its own advertisement, and the list changes yearly.

Exam Centres

GATE runs at centres across India and a few abroad. You list preferred cities in order when you apply. Your allotted city is announced on 4 January 2027, before the admit card, so you can plan travel early. Preferences are followed where there's room but aren't guaranteed. The centre address is on the admit card.

The opening date moved twice, from 14 August 2026 to 27 August and then to 2 September. IIT Madras says all dates may change. There are six exam days, against four in GATE 2026, because of 30 papers and the new Robotics and Automation paper.

Admit Card

Download the admit card from GOAPS with your enrolment ID or e-mail and password. Your exam city is announced first, on 4 January 2027; the admit card with the centre address follows on a date IIT Madras hasn't fixed yet.

Bring it with the original photo ID whose details you entered in the application. A different document or a photocopy isn't accepted.

Result
  • Marks out of 100: what you scored in your session.
  • GATE Score out of 1000: normalised against the qualifying mark and the top scorers. This is the number institutes and employers compare.

Papers held in several sessions are normalised across them. A score is valid for three years from the result.

Your response sheet and the provisional answer key come out before the result, with a paid challenge window. The subject committee decides challenges, so the final key can differ.

Cut Off

GATE publishes a qualifying mark for each paper and category, set each year from that year's results. It earns you a scorecard, nothing more, so an old figure is only a rough guide.

The score that gets an IIT M.Tech seat or a PSU call in Mechanical Engineering is well above it. PSUs set their own cut-offs on the GATE Score in their advertisements, and these vary with the year's vacancies.

Past ME papers and answer keys are on the GATE 2027 download page.

Preparation Tips
  1. Answer every MSQ and NAT. No penalty. Save caution for MCQs.
  2. Take the maths seriously. Complex variables, numerical methods, Fourier series, vector calculus and Laplace transforms, all for 13 marks. It can't be crammed in a fortnight.
  3. Don't give away General Aptitude. 15 marks with no subject knowledge needed.
  4. Section 3 decides most results. Fluids, heat transfer and thermodynamics carry the heaviest numerical load, mostly as NAT questions.
  5. Revise from the 2027 syllabus, including Additive Manufacturing.
  6. Practise with the virtual calculator. Long thermal and machining arithmetic is slower on screen.
  7. Think before adding RA. Robotics and Automation is new in 2027 and can be paired with ME. The fee doubles, and a second paper crammed in the last month usually costs the first more than it gains.
  8. Work previous papers by section. IIT Madras publishes ME papers with answer keys for 2021 to 2026 on the GATE 2027 download page, with a bulk archive back to 2007. The section distribution is stable enough to plan around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which IIT is conducting GATE 2027?

IIT Madras. The organiser rotates among IISc and the seven older IITs, and the website changes with it.

Is there an age or attempt limit?

Neither, and your degree needn't match your paper.

How are the 100 marks divided?

General Aptitude 15, Engineering Mathematics 13, core Mechanical 72.

Which questions carry negative marking?

Only MCQs: 1/3 for a wrong 1-mark question, 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark one.

Does MSQ give partial credit?

No.

What changed in the ME syllabus for 2027?

It was revised, and Additive Manufacturing is now a named topic in Section 4.

Can I sit two papers?

Yes: AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA or XE with ME. The fee doubles.

Is a calculator allowed?

Only the on-screen virtual one.

What's the difference between marks and GATE Score?

Marks are out of 100. The GATE Score is out of 1000, normalised, and is what institutes and PSUs compare.

Does qualifying get me an M.Tech seat?

No. You still apply through COAP or CCMT, and the scores that win seats are well above the qualifying mark.

Can third-year students apply?

Yes, from the 3rd year of any undergraduate degree.
