Identify the information scientist who developed 'sense making' theory of information needs :
MH SET - 2018, SET Exam - 2018,
Answer: A
The sense-making theory was developed by Brenda Dervin.
Dervin's sense-making methodology, developed from the early 1970s, sees an information need as a gap that a person meets while moving through a situation. People seek information to bridge that gap and make sense of their situation, so user studies should ask about situations, gaps and uses rather than about library sources.
Nicholas Belkin proposed the anomalous state of knowledge (ASK) model of information needs, a different theory. Michael Buckland is known for 'information as thing', and Blaise Cronin for work on citation analysis and scholarly communication.
