GSET Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

1244 topics across 119 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

The Gujarat State Eligibility Test (GSET) decides who is eligible to be an Assistant Professor in the universities and colleges of Gujarat. The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, runs it as the state's UGC-accredited nodal agency. Qualifying makes you eligible; posts are filled under each university's or college's recruitment rules.

The 20th GSET is on Sunday, 29 November 2026, in 36 subjects at 12 centres in Gujarat. Registration closed on 22 July 2026.

  • Two objective papers on OMR sheets in one three-hour sitting, no negative marking.
  • The syllabus is the UGC-NET one, or CSIR-NET's for the five science subjects.
  • Only 6 per cent of those who sit both papers qualify, and only Gujarat-domiciled candidates can claim reservation.
  • Unlike NET, GSET carries no Junior Research Fellowship.

Syllabus

The GSET syllabus is the same as UGC/CSIR NET. For Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences and Earth Sciences it is the CSIR-NET syllabus, but the paper still follows the UGC-NET pattern above. For every other subject it is the UGC-NET syllabus. Download them from the GSET Syllabus page; nothing is posted to candidates.

Paper I is common to all. Paper II is the subject of your Master's.

Eligibility Criteria

Degree and marks

  • A UGC-recognised Master's degree in a GSET subject, completed or in its final year.
  • 55 per cent for General and General-EWS; 50 per cent for SEBC (non-creamy layer), SC, ST, PwD and third gender. No rounding off.
  • Ph.D. holders who finished their Master's by 19 September 1991 get 5 per cent off (55 to 50).
  • PG diplomas and foreign degrees need equivalence from the Association of Indian Universities.
  • No upper age limit.

Who can't sit it

  • Students in the first year of a two-year Master's, the first two semesters of a four-semester course, or the fourth year of a five-year integrated Master's.
  • Anyone who has already qualified GSET in that subject. Doing so cancels the certificate.

Final-year candidates

You're admitted provisionally and must pass the Master's with 55 or 50 per cent within two years of the GSET result, or you're disqualified.

Reservation is for Gujarat only

Reservation follows Gujarat's policy for higher education admission, and needs certificates issued in Gujarat. Reserved candidates from other states must apply as General; one who qualifies under a reserved category is disqualified. SEBC candidates need a current non-creamy layer certificate, and a Central OBC certificate isn't accepted. Third gender candidates get the same concessions as SC and ST, and their cut-off in each subject is the lowest of the SC, ST and SEBC cut-offs.

Selection Process

GSET only decides eligibility. The result procedure:

StepWhat happens
I. Slots6 per cent of candidates who sat both papers on the basis of a Master's degree
II. CategoriesSlots split by Gujarat's reservation policy for higher education admission
III. MinimumAt least 40 per cent aggregate (General, General-EWS) or 35 per cent (SC, ST, SEBC non-creamy layer, PwD, third gender) across both papers
IV. SubjectsEach category's slots are shared across subjects in proportion to the candidates who reached the minimum; where they run out is the cut-off

Marks for every candidate are posted on the GSET site. There's no mark sheet, and qualifiers get an e-certificate with a QR code for verification, not a printed one. Keep your application printout, hall ticket and document copies: they're checked when you're recruited.

Salary

GSET carries no pay. It makes you eligible for Assistant Professor posts in Gujarat; pay is set by the university or college that appoints you.

Preparation Tips

Use the right syllabus

Science candidates study the CSIR-NET syllabus but face a UGC-NET-style paper: 100 compulsory questions, no parts to choose.

Answer everything

No negative marking, so leave nothing blank.

Challenge the key only with evidence

A challenge costs ₹1,000 a question, goes in writing to the Member Secretary with supporting references, and is not heard after the result.

Sample Papers

The GSET office posts every past exam's question papers and answer keys for all subjects on its Old Question Papers and Old Answer Keys pages.
